EPHEMERA

Reflecting on the fleeting delights of nature

The Esoterics' EPHEMERA, which will be performed only in the ensemble's two Seattle venues, will feature Se Enkhbayar's Two Mongolian folksongs: that praise the mighty chestnut horses of Chinngis Khan, and recreate a lush mirage providing reprieve from the Gobi's oppressive heat. Three Indonesian folksongs by Budi Susanto Yohanes celebrate the birds in the wind, the leaves of the taro, and the stars that surround the moon – with the trance-like textures and jagged rhythms of Madura, Banyuwangi, and Bali. Swedish composer Lars Johan Werle's trees sets four arboreal poems – ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous – by the incomparable e. e. cummings. In addition to these works, The Esoterics will reprise L'invitation au voyage, the ecstatic setting of Richard Wilbur's Baudelaire by one of last year's POLYPHONOS winners, Scott Perkins, and will be premiering two new works – Eric Banks' bouquet of haiku by Yosa Buson (Twelve flowers), and Donald Skrivin's elegant triptych of poems by Gordon Abshire (Awakenings).
